After a sold-out run in Joburg last year, South African singing sensation Belinda Davids returns to the stage with The Greatest Love of All, an acclaimed tribute to the legendary Whitney Houston.
In 2023, Davids’ tour is in full swing with return tours and debut tours planned. From 24 August to 10 September, the special return season at Joburg Theatre’s Mandela Theatre will include additional songs from Houston’s repertoire with state-of-the-art sound, lighting, visual and theatrical effects.
An “entertainment spectacle,” The Greatest Love of All not only promises joy, nostalgia and wonderment, but the vocal prowess of Davids proves the artist as a star in her own right. Her command of the stage and mesmerising vocals effortlessly bring Houston’s musical legacy to life.
Born in the small coastal town of Port Elizabeth, Davids’ talent was glaringly apparent from an early age. Still to this day she has never had vocal training and is blessed with a 4-octave vocal range, putting her in the company of such vocal luminaries as Minnie Riperton, Mariah Carey, Christina Aguilera and Freddie Mercury. Growing up, Davids was innately drawn to Houston’s musical style which resonated with the same modest familial values and gospel influences that pervaded her own upbringing. Now, decades later, she finds herself in the shoes of her idol on stages across the globe, performing alongside stars like Keri Hilson, Keyshia Cole and Monica.
“The high demand for tickets for last year’s season was phenomenal. As soon as the shows sold out, we were inundated with requests from fans asking for a return season,” says Xoliswa Nduneni-Ngema, CEO at Joburg City Theatres. “Belinda Davids will be back and we are privileged to host her return to the Joburg Theatre.”
The two-hour production sends audiences on a heartfelt journey through Houston’s greatest hits with songs like I Will Always Love You, I Wanna Dance With Somebody, How Will I Know, One Moment in Time, I Have Nothing, Run to You, Didn’t We Almost Have It All, Greatest Love of All, I’m Every Woman, Queen of the Night, Exhale (Shoop Shoop), Million Dollar Bill and more.
