Visual artist Shirin Neshat has been announced as the 2020-21 Master of Photography at Photo London. The award is given annually to a leading contemporary photographer who is the subject of a special exhibition at the fair, taking place from 1 – 12 September 2021.
Neshat is a US-based Iranian artist who works with the mediums of photography, video and film.
For her exhibition at Photo London, Neshat presents her latest body of work Land of Dreams. Commissioned for Neshat’s major US museum survey in 2019 at The Broad Museum, Los Angeles before making its European debut at Goodman Gallery London last year, Land of Dreams marks a significant visual and conceptual shift for the artist, who has turned her lens to the landscape and people of the American West. Shown for the first time in full in the UK, the presentation at Photo London features all 111 photographs of New Mexico residents taken by Neshat, alongside her two-channel film installation.
In addition, a feature-length film of Land of Dreams directed by Neshat and Shoja Azari will have its world premiere at Orizzonti Extra as part of the 78th Venice International Film Festival, Biennale Cinema 2021 on 2 September 2021.
