The Artist Proof Studio has a new home

This March sees the relocation of renowned printmaking centre The Artist Proof Studio (APS) to Houghton.

In a short statement put out via email and social media, APS announced that it would be vacating its current premises, located on Helen Joseph Street in the heart of Johannesburg’s Newtown Precinct, and will take up residence at the Isle of Houghton where visitors can find the new studio and offices on the 1st floor of 1 Harrow Court.
APS was founded in 1991 by Kim Berman and Nhlanhla Xaba as a community printmaking centre that reflected the spirit of a healthy democracy and the ideals expressed in the new South African constitution. As printmaking was seen as a democratic medium and a counterforce to the suspicion and division left from the apartheid years, it was considered to be a fitting approach to building a truly egalitarian society.
APS would eventually become the pioneering community art centre that it is today, focussing its efforts into the key components of printmaking – print production, sales, education, and training.
