As we approach one year of lockdown in South Africa, The Lockdown Collection (TLC) and Latitudes Online announce their online auction, created by 21 South African artists, the proceeds of which will go towards benefitting artists affected by the pandemic.
This follows the 2020 curated auction by TLC, which saw proceeds going into a fund that supported artists during lockdown, and later giving way to The Extension Collection, and The Student Collection. To date, TLC has paid out over 500 grants – an amount of R1,5 million – from its Vulnerable Artists Fund (VAF) to artists across South Africa, as well as donated R250 000 to the President’s SA Solidarity Fund, for the benefit of all South Africans in need, in partnership with Latitudes Online.
The auction of the OPEN CALL COLLECTION
Now, TLC and Latitudes.Online have come together to host an online auction created by 21 South African artists. The number 21 is still used with reference to the first 21 days of the South African Lockdown.
This curated collection will be auctioned via the Latitudes Online platform, from 21 – 23 March 2021. Contributing artists include Cinthia Sifa Mulanga, Fanie Buys, Khanyisile Mawhayi, Vivien Kohler, and Zana Masombuka to name a few.
The auction is an opportunity for collectors to discover and acquire works by emerging artists, while contributing to a charitable cause. The proceeds will be split between the contributing artists, the Lockdown Collection’s Vulnerable Fund and Latitudes Outreach.
Partners in a powerful campaign for South African art
‘We are delighted to be partnering with Latitudes for the launch of another TLC collection,’ says Lauren Woolf, one of the TLC founders and the founding owner of MRS WOOLF. ‘Latitudes has successfully created an online platform, which creates a bridge between art buyers, globally, and artists in South Africa. We are so excited to offer TLC artworks via this platform, and continue to raise funds for those in need.’
Says Lucy MacGarry, co-founder of Latitudes, ‘The Lockdown Collection has demonstrated that art has value that we cannot put a price onto. Art can mobilise a community, it can uplift the vulnerable and it can tell a story that moves us. For Latitudes Online, the partnership with The Lockdown Collection is a welcome opportunity to leverage the strengths of both our organisations.’
The TLC Open Call Collection in partnership with Latitudes Online, will launch on 21 March 2021, on the Latitudes Online site.
