CF: The Market Theatre is celebrating The Market Theatre with a Shakespeare twist across all your social media platforms from Thursday 20 August 2020. Chilling with the Bard Shakespeare season is based on speeches from some of his prolific plays that were written for male characters. Is this not a rather unusual way to celebrate women, please tell us more about it?
TM: Something that is very visible in the DNA of the Market Theatre is how, from its inception, this is a theatre that has always loved the idea of not only challenging itself but also to throw a challenge to our loyal patrons and to give the actors wider choices to play with. The most beautiful thing about this inverse theme around these iconic speeches is that it is not a gimmick, it is completely driven by the need to articulate that the most fascinating and joyful element of Shakespeare’s writing is that it can’t be locked in a pigeon-hole of race or gender. The words are so beautifully woven together and we wanted to have women spewing this poetry that touches on different themes that were the pivot of his writing. The femininity is not hidden. There is no huge effort ‘to play a man’. It is showcasing the immense skill from these actresses, their love and deep understanding of the layered text, the pertinence of the text to the present landscape, the timelessness of it all and to have FUN. That is why we make theatre, to find a moment, to pause, to escape the norm, the mundane and present complex biographies to our audiences.
