‘During this extraordinary and difficult time, the Met hopes to brighten the lives of our audience members even while our stage is dark,’ the theatre said in a post on its website.
Every day, the Met will stream an encore presentation from its Live in HD series.
The streams will be available for free via the Met’s website, with every performance viewable for 23 hours, from 19:30 EDT (01:30 SA local time) until 18:30 (00:30 SA local time) the next day.
The shows in the Met’s digital repertoire include astounding performances featuring all of opera’s greatest stars.
The streams can also be accessed through Met Opera on Demand apps.
Like many other businesses, the venue had to close as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Thus, the Met was faced with no other option but to cancel the remainder of the 2019-2020 season, which was set to end May 9, 2020.
‘This decision, as difficult and disappointing as it is for our audience and for the entire company, was unavoidable in light of the unprecedented challenges ahead,’ the company stated on its website here.
However, this closure also means that the company will lose out on revenue from anticipated ticket purchases as well as those already sold.
‘Hundreds of thousands of people have been tuning in daily to our free performance streams, and many of them have kindly been asking how they can help the Met during this economically perilous time,’ the post continues.
