An opera concert for a cause

On Sunday, 1 March 2020 the internationally acclaimed tenor Stéfan Louw will be presenting his show Lirico – Live in Concert at the Vissi d’Arte Theatre at the Casta Diva Boutique Hotel in Pretoria. The show aims to raise funds for Louw’s wife’s breast cancer treatment.

Stéfan Louw, who grew up a stone’s throw from the theatre and went to school around the corner from the venue, says it feels good to return to his roots for this special concert. ‘I haven’t had a show so close to home in many years,’ he explains. ‘And I am looking forward to sharing the beauty of opera with family, old friends, and fans.’
The Vissi d’Arte Theatre is no stranger to presenting classical music shows. Co-owner of the Casta Diva Boutique Hotel, Charles Fridsma, says: ‘Because of my and my business partner’s love for opera, we decided to build a theatre on the property. Since its launch in 2005, more than 700 classical music concerts have been hosted in the theatre.’

Louw made his debut in 1998 to great acclaim. His debut role, Beppe in Leoncavallo’s opera Pagliacci, earned him the prestigious FNB Vita Opera Award for Most Promising Newcomer in Opera. By 2005 the Sunday Times reported that ‘his voice should be declared a national treasure.’ In 2008, he performed his first dramatic tenor role as Radamès in Verdi’s opera Aida – opening in Johannesburg, then as his European debut in Vichy, France. During his European opera tour in 2017, he sang 240 performances in seven months. Louw’s 22-year opera career has seen him perform in all major South African cities, Namibia, Mozambique, the United States of America, and Europe. He has produced two opera albums, Reflections and Lirico, and his third album Spinto will be released soon.
After his wife’s breast cancer diagnosis in August last year, Louw started arranging a series of fundraising concerts. This is because their medical aid only partially covers his wife’s various treatments. The amount covered by their medical aid over twelve months is R200 000, after which their co-payments are 20%. Still, her total treatment cost is expected to be more than R400 000 in the first twelve months, and quite substantial in the following two to five years.
