The sixth SAJE Jazz Festival is a three-day event that brings the best South African and international talent in the jazz world to two fabulous venues during Jazz Appreciation Month (fondly known as JAM). The Festival takes place from 26 to 28 April 2019 in Cape Town and consists of concerts and workshops. International Jazz Day will be celebrated on Sunday 28 April and is the culmination of JAM, which draws public attention to jazz and its extraordinary heritage throughout April.
The SAJE Jazz Festival is a biennial event focusing on jazz education, performance, workshops, skills and audience development. It offers a unique forum for musicians, jazz fans, academics, educators and teachers, students and learners, to engage with the latest sounds and ideas in jazz – especially South African jazz. Along with workshops, performances and industry displays, there will be opportunities for discussion, information exchange, and networking.
This year, the Festival offers an exciting line-up of South African jazz musicians and educators – including McCoy Mrubata (sax) and Paul Hanmer (piano), Standard Bank Young Artist for Jazz 2012 Afrika Mkhize (piano), Salim Washington (sax), Darius Brubeck (piano) and Mike Rossi (woodwinds), Lumanyano Unity Mzi (drums) and The Unity Band. International guests include saxophonist Emanuele Cisi (Italy), vocalist/composer Florence Chitacumbi (Switzerland/Angola) and percussionist Mino Cinelu (France/USA). The concert on Friday 26 April is entitled ‘Jazz for Curious Minds’ and Saturday 27 April – ‘South African Jazz’. On the afternoon of Sunday 28 April, International Jazz Day will be celebrated at Guga S’thebe in Langa with an interesting line-up of South African and international jazz musicians. All artists will have their CDs on sale at both venues.
So there will be something for everyone at this year’s Festival. This is a great opportunity to sponsor someone or bring a friend to one of the jazz events. It is important to encourage everyone to support live music and live music venues. All concert tickets are R120, with discounts for pensioners and students, and are available at the door or through www.quicket.co.za
