Family-focused START Festival added to Art Week Joburg line-up

On Saturday 8 September 2018 St Teresa’s School, located on the Keyes Art Mile in Johannesburg, launches the inaugural St Teresa’s Art Festival (START), an event that aims to make art appreciation, learning and buying more accessible and welcoming to all.

START Festival

START Festival is:

  • a platform for art collectors looking for affordable art, prints, illustrations and ceramics.
  • an opportunity for students with an interest in art to learn about careers in art, be it as a curator, an auctioneer, a buyer or an artist.
  • a space for families wanting to foster an appreciation for art in their children and enjoy a great day out filled with food, fun and creativity.

START will take visitors on a journey through a variety of art mediums: from painting to virtual reality, and from production to curating. There’ll be workshops and activities in printmaking, screen-printing, etching, origami, watercolour, graffiti, paintball art, clay and virtual reality to name a few. Visitors will hear from guest speakers from the local art industry including Marco Cianfanelli, the renowned sculptor famous for the portrait sculpture Release, at the Nelson Mandela Capture Site in KwaZulu-Natal, Wilhelm van Rensburg, a Senior Art Specialist at Strauss & Co Fine Art, South Africa’s leading art auction house and Laura Windvogel (a.k.a. Lady Skollie) a visual artist whose artistic expression revolves around the theme of gender roles and feminism.
St Teresa’s partnership with the Keyes Art Mile and the proximity to established galleries in Rosebank make it the ideal location to host an event of this nature. Here, visitors can share their appreciation for art during the cultural highlight of the year, Art Week Joburg.
