Vuyani Dance Theatre (VDT) is a multi-awarded and globally esteemed contemporary African dance company, founded by decorated dancer and choreographer Gregory Vuyani Maqoma in 1999. VDT serves as the CSI and developmental arm of Vuyani Dance Company.
Maqoma, who serves as Executive Director, established the company (based in Johannesburg, South Africa) as a playground for artistic development, coupled with a strong outreach programme.
This year , 2017 VDT celebrates its 18th anniversary of creating cutting-edge theatrical works, which have been presented in 100 cities across the globe including Paris, Lagos, Harare, Gaborone, Windhoek, Bamako, Auckland, Berlin, London, Amsterdam, Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban, Bloemfontein, Mexico City, Los Angeles, New York, Barcelona, Kalamata, Beijing, Toronto, Singapore and Washington, DC.
Over the years, VDT has worked with world-class artists such as Hugh Masekela, Sibongile Khumalo, Simphiwe Dana, Salif Keita, Black Eyed Peas, Erik Truffaz and Alicia Keys.
In addition to its acclaimed and award-winning theatrical works, the company has created and choreographed works for corporates including Audi, De Beers Shining Light Awards, RMB, Eskom, Metro FM Awards, the National Teaching Awards, the ANC centenary celebration musical Tshihumbudzo, Group 5 and the 2010 FIFA World Cup pre-opening concert. The company has scooped several national and international awards for its choreography and staging.
