From as early as the end of November 2016, to March 2017, South African theatres will be jam-packed with exciting local and international musicals, theatrical circus and dance productions. There’s something for everyone to enjoy!
District Six – Kanala (Cape Town)

Eric Abraham and the Fugard Theatre presents the musical tribute, District Six – Kanala created and directed by David Kramer to mark the 50th anniversary of the destruction of District Six. The production celebrates and recreates some of the vibrant musical culture that was part of 1960’s District Six. Popular music that reverberated through Hanover Street, the Star Bioscope, the Tafelberg Hotel, the La Fiesta, the Drill and City Hall and the Green Point Track is exuberantly recreated by a fabulously talented cast.

The Sound of Music (Durban)

From 26 November to 30 December 2016 at The Playhouse theatre in Durban is a fresh and new production of the heart-warming musical, The Sound of Music. Directed by award-winning director and actor, Ralph Lawson, this remake of the story of Maria and the Von Trapp family is a family affair features a star-studded cast, including the KZN Philharmonic Orchestra, and a phenomenal creative team. Look forward to this magnificent opera with the original music and lyrics of a legendary musical theatre team.

Cirque Éloize iD (Johannesburg)

This theatre production is a blend of circus arts and urban dance: b-boying/b-girling, breakdance, hip-hop and more, expressed to a stimulating soundtrack created by composers Jean-Phi Goncalves (Beast) and Alex McMahon. Cirque Éloize ID is showing at Montecasino’s Teatro for a limited season from 30 November until 24 December 2016. Everyone will love this mind-blowing fusion of new theatrical circus and urban dance.

Signatures (Johannesburg)

Vuyani Dance Theatre’s annual showcase of professional, emerging and youthful talent – to be staged at the John Kani Theatre at Johannesburg’s Market Theatre over the weekend of 2 to 4 December 2016 – will be bigger and bolder than before. This year’s Signatures season features iconic favourites, Rhythm Colour, Page 27 and Gula. Also in the programme are two new and exciting works titled Something Black and Yellow and Beyond. Don’t miss this riveting dance season!

West Side Story (Johannesburg)

Coming to the Joburg Theatre, Johannesburg from 24 January to 5 March 2017 is this smash hit production of Shakespeare’s timeless story of Romeo and Juliet. West Side Story takes the classic star-crossed lovers and places them in the battleground of New York City’s West Side in the 1950s. The musical explores themes of love, tragedy, racism, immigration, clashes in different ethnic backgrounds and gang rivalry, all relevant to the South Africa’s current social climate.
