Applications are now open for the renowned South African contemporary dance festival Dance Umbrella 2017.
Dance Umbrella 2017 will take place in various theatres and venues in Johannesburg, from March 1 to March 12, 2017.
Dance Umbrella remains a free platform for new contemporary choreography and dance. The 29th edition of this internationally renowned festival will include:
– the Main Programme which focuses on new work (30 to 60 minutes long) from South African choreographers and international works
– the Young Artists programme which focuses on young choreographers creating work that challenges and interrogates
– the Stepping Stones Programme which is specifically for youth groups, community groups and hip hop/pantsula. This also includes anyone who wants to present a new work within a formal performance space where the process is supported with lighting and sound. No further entries will be accepted, however, once the Stepping Stones and Street Dance programmes are fully subscribed.
The Dance Umbrella platform is open to any new contemporary dance work. This includes performance art, hip hop, pantsula and afro-fusion. The selection of works and the sequencing of the programmes are done at the discretion of the organisers, the artistic director and consultants. Following this, their decisions are final.
The venues for Dance Umbrella and all technical facilities within the budget, the theatre, publicity, posters and programmes are provided free. This is at no cost to the participating choreographers, dance companies or groups.
The closing date for entries is Friday, September 19, 2016. No late entries will be accepted.
