The South African State Theatre is proud to present the Standard Bank Young Artist for Dance 2015, Luyanda Sidiya’s work SIVA, produced by Vuyani Dance Theatre.
Sidiya’s latest work SIVA (Seven) will be performed by Vuyani Dance Theatre, noted for its cutting edge theatrical works.
As human beings tangled in our own disorder, disruption and disassociation, we constantly yearn for that which guides us to completeness, to oneness. We are in constant search within ourselves, in others, and all around us, for connectedness and peace.
Sidiya has won numerous awards for choreography and was artistic director at Vuyani Dance Theatre 2014 – 2015.
Sidiya’s interest in dance began at school where he worked with various township dance, music and drama groups. In 1999 he attended classes at the Dance Factory in Johannesburg and received formal training at Moving into Dance Mophatong (MIDM).
As a dancer with the MIDM Company he performed nationally and internationally and facilitated workshops in dance companies abroad. His skills soon saw him appointed as the Afro-fusion dance teacher and rehearsal director at MIDM.
He then went on to teach choreography and African dance at Bennington College in Vermont, USA, before spending three years with the ACE dance and Music Company in the UK.
Vuyani Dance Theatre is an African contemporary dance company based in Newtown, Johannesburg. It was formed by Gregory Maqoma in 1999 as a playground for artistic development and also runs a strong outreach programme to groom the next generation of dancing talent. The company has performed in major cities across the globe including Paris, Lagos, Auckland, Berlin, London, Amsterdam, Mexico City, Los Angeles, New York, Barcelona and Singapore.
