Unisa Ensembles to Perform Unique Concert

The Unisa Symphony Orchestra and Wind Ensemble are the flagship ensembles of the Unisa Music Foundation. Each ensemble is comprised of approximately 70 of the best students from the Unisa Music Foundation’s Community Engagement programme which currently serves over 1200 students in disadvantaged communities across Gauteng.

Over the past few years, the ensembles have been drawing record audiences and excellent media reviews.

In November 2015 the Unisa Youth Orchestra was established and performed their inaugural concert alongside the Symphony Orchestra and Wind Ensemble. This orchestra is comprised of approximately 100 of the youngest learners in the Unisa Music Foundation’s Community Music Engagement programme.

All three ensembles will perform a unique concert on Sunday 08 May 2016 at the ZK Matthews Great Hall at Unisa Muckleneuk Campus. They will perform works ranging from Bach, Brahms and Dvořák to selections from Les Misérables and Broadway.

An exciting addition to the repertoire will be two works for jazz saxophone, jazz rhythm section and full orchestra that will be performed by nationally renowned jazz saxophonist, Karendra Devroop. The two works are well-known South African jazz standards that have been orchestrated for jazz saxophone, piano, bass, drums and full orchestra. Both works will be premiered at the concert.

The orchestra will be conducted by the young and incredibly talented Xavier Cloete.

Tickets are sold at the door for R110 (adults) and R85 (students and pensioners).
