The first Pop Up With event of 2017 offers all levels of art collectors the rare opportunity to own a piece of South African art history.
The Modernist Limited Edition Prints Pop Up Shop features work by Walter Battiss, Lucky Sibaya, Cecil Skotnes, Judith Mason, Dirk Meerkotter and Fred Schimmel among many others. It takes place on Sunday, 2 April at Parktown High School for Girls in Johannesburg. Unusually for a current print collection, the works on sale at the upcoming pop up were made during the 1970s and early 1980s – drawn from one of the most important art clubs South Africa has ever produced, the Graphic Club. Started by artist Fred Schimmel in the late 60s, the Graphic Club was aimed at giving entry-level collectors an accessible way of owning investment art. For a monthly membership fee, members were entitled to two works by any of the artists who were contributing to the club. With many based out of the legendary Polly Street Art Centre in central Johannesburg, the artists made screenprint works that are now firmly part of the Modernist tradition. The prints are embossed with the letters GC – Graphic Club – and are signed, dated and editioned. After Fred died in 2009, the Graphic Club work was conserved by his daughter Gail, who has now made the original collection available through the Modernist Limited Prints Pop Up Shop. The collection of prints varies in price from R1 500 to R60 000, with many priced in the R3 500 to R5 000 range. It includes a number of multi print folios that are well suited to corporate interiors. The Modernist Limited Edition Prints Pop Up Shop has no entrance fee and will also feature supervised children’s art activities with artisanal food and beverage trucks – making it a great family outing this April.
