Marijke Willems finds that photography has never been a career choice for her, but rather a natural metamorphosis from childhood games to her everyday passion. This passion for photography slowly grew from when Willems was ten years old and given a camera as a gift. She began her career working as an assistant for acclaimed photographer, Merwelene van der Merwe, for four years.

Willems then moved to the Netherlands in 2005 to further her studies while she worked as a freelance photographer. In 2008, she graduated with a qualification in Fashion Advertising from the Foto Academie in Amsterdam. Willems was among 5 other photographers invited to exhibit their work at the Fashion Re/Considered: Young emerging talents in fashion photography exhibition hosted by Amsterdam Fashion Week.

In 2009, Willems returned to South Africa and has since built up an extensive client list, one being the reputable Vuyani Dance Theatre. She has also earned herself the title “Next Big Photographer” at Audi’s commercial “A-okay” photography competition in 2011.

My mission is to treat each shot as art and therefore I love to shoot in a way that I can create a concept around it. My mission includes emphasising the love and the passion I have for photography. See and reveal it in a different way that will inspire and seek attention by extremes
