Cula Mzansi! – Sing South Africa! – Short Operas

From 16 to 24 June 2016, Gauteng’s most vibrant opera company will present three 20-minute contemporary short operas in Cula Mzansi.

The triple bill Cula Mzansi – literally meaning ‘sing South Africa’ – is presented by Gauteng Opera in collaboration with the South African State Theatre.

The Gauteng Opera is an all-round performing arts and entertainment company focussing on opera related productions, concerts and events. With the slogan “Opera for Everyone”, Gauteng Opera aims to expose opera to varied audiences with different opera offerings. Driven by excellence in vocal performance and theatre, Gauteng Opera prides itself in being one of the foremost nurturers of experts and proponents for quality vocal performance and theatre practitioners.

These semi-biographical short operas tell the stories of a child as the central character taking us through the world through his eyes of prejudice, miscommunication, greed and xenophobia in Out of Time by Peter Louis van Dijk; Tronkvoël by Martin Watt that draws its inspiration from an event that occurred during the imprisonment of the South African poet Breyten Breytenbach; and Hani by Bongani Ndodana-Breen which surrounds the slain politician Chris Hani as an embodiment of all those who lost their lives fighting injustice.

The three short operas on offer with Cula Mzansi will be conducted by Eddie Clayton and directed by Tshepo Ratona and Marcus Desando, with set and lighting design by the multi-award-winning Wilhelm Disbergen. Desando, the CEO of Gauteng Opera, will also serve as chorus master.

Performances of Cula Mzansi will open on Youth Day, Thursday, 16 June with additional performances on Saturday, 18 June; Tuesday, 21 June; Thursday, 23 June and Friday, 24 June 2016 at 20:00.

There will be a special school performance at 12:00 on Wednesday, 22 June 2016.

Tickets cost R80 throughout and are available at Computicket.
