Today, Wednesday 18 May 2016, Iziko Museums of South Africa joins the global museum community to celebrate International Museum Day under the banner “Museums and Cultural Landscapes.” Entrance is free (excluding the Planetarium and Castle of Good Hope) and an exciting programme of various activities is planned.
This diverse range of educational and interactive activities will be hosted mainly at the Iziko South African Museum, Queen Victoria Street, Cape Town and aims to give the public an insight into the Iziko social history, natural history and art collections.
The Iziko South African Museum will give the public an opportunity to see the collections with guided tours and behind the scenes tours. The programme involves interactive features such as “Ask the Curator” and “Interactive Canvas – Tell us about your favourite landscape or place”. Both these events are designed to allow the public to engage with the exhibitions and curators.
Guided tours are also on offer at the Iziko Slave Lodge and Iziko Rust en Vreugd. Tour operators are invited to participate in a special tour for tour operators at the Slave Lodge.
At the Planetarium 4 – 12 year olds are treated to a free show entitled, 15 Billion BC and the ever popular book sale will be held at the Iziko SA National Gallery between 10 am – 3pm.
The Iziko Mobile Museum can be seen at the Lwandle Workers Museum, Lwandle, Strand today, the 18th and the 20th of May between 11 am – 3pm. School learners are particularly invited to visit the mobile museum and have a museum experience.
On 19th, 20th and 21st of May, the Iziko SA Museum will host a cultural performance titled Walking Tall in the Rock Art Gallery.
Entrance to all Iziko Museums is free on Museum Day, 18 May with special group concessions offered on Saturday, 21 May.
