Knight of Cups is the latest film from visionary director Terrence Malick (Days Of Heaven, The Thin Red Line, The Tree Of Life).
The storyline centres around Rick (Christian Bale) who is a comedy writer living in present-day Santa Monica. Rick longs for something other, something beyond the life he knows, without knowing quite what it is, or how to go about finding it.
The death of his brother, Billy, hangs over Ricky like a still shadow. His father, Joseph (Brian Dennehy), fights with feelings of angst and guilt for Billy’s death, while a surviving brother, Barry (Wes Bentley), down on his luck, has just moved to LA from where they grew up in Missouri.
Rick seeks distraction in the company of women. Women seem to him to know more than he does. They bring him closer to the heart of things, closer to the mystery. The parties, dalliances, his career…none has satisfied. And still each woman and each man he’s met through the course of his life has served him in some way as a guide, a messenger.
Will he set forth in his pursuit of the something other he is yearning for? Will his courage fail him? Will he stay awake? Or will he let it all just be a dream, a hope, a passing fancy?
Knight of Cups stars Christian Bale, Cate Blanchett and Natalie Portman and will release exclusively on the Ster Kinekor Cinema Nouveau circuit on the 11th of March 2016.
